A shearling coat is a quintessential cold-weather design. Its enduring appeal can perhaps be attributed to the fact that it manages to be many things at once. It’s cosy yet glamorous; it has an effortless feel yet makes a statement and it’s as suitable for those who are into fashion as they are function. A true high-low item, it’s little surprise that both the high street and fashion houses have recently released spins on the classic design.
“The AW23 Miu Miu collection solidified the shearling coat trend for this season”, says Sinead Cutts, The Outnet‘s style director. “I loved the toffee-coloured double-breasted style, layered with a hooded jacket underneath. This modern take on styling showed a fresh new perspective on this classic trend item.”
Due to the craftsmanship that goes into creating the garment, a shearling coat is often an investment but one worth making. Choose wisely and you’ll be able to wear it for many years to come. “An important element to consider when buying a shearling coat is the weight,” advises Cutts. “To be able to wear the coat every day – you must be comfortable with the weight of the piece.”
Of course, the classic option would be a camel suede version complete with large brown buttons and a thick white shearling lining but for those that want something a little different, there are plenty of alternative styles to choose from right now. You may find a shearling lining in a leather coat, a shearling collar and cuffs on a classic overcoat or a duffle jacket with a luxe shearling update. Some designs are real, some are faux.
To ensure it does become an heirloom, do veer away from trend-led pieces that will quickly age and of course, consider how you store it. “Given the durable material it’s been made from, a shearling coat should be relatively low maintenance to look after. Invest in a high-quality suede brush and spot clean rather than dry cleaning or washing your piece and house it in a breathable cloth bag over the warm summer months for extra care”, says Cutts.
